    Hello friend,
    I currently have Gungnir Multibit with Valhalla 2 and Hd 650.
    What are some options for a cheaper dac? Perhaps a Bifrost Multibit?

    I think Gungnir Multibit is wonderful but may be too good for my needs.

    I will answer even though the next 5 posts will all be about this belonging in the general advice thread..

    I've recently come to the conclusion that the source is where the magic comes from. Soundstage, detail, resolution, the feeling of the hair standing up on your neck when everything comes together etc all come from the source, be it digital or analog.

    You have a fantastic headphone & amp combo with the HD650 and Valhalla 2. The Gungnir Multibit is a perfect pairing if you can afford it, no such thing as too good. Both the HD650 and Valhalla will be able to handle the detail that the Gungnir Multibit can output.

    The bifrost is the next logical step down, either 4490 or multibit. There are some other recommendations out there, but I have always found schiit is a perfect match for schiit.

    I found the Bifrost Multibit to be pretty darn magical and euphonic. When I heard the Gungnir Multibit I could tell it was a better DAC but it didn't make me regret getting the Bifrost Multibit in the least.

    To me it's all about what you can afford. I've got 3x invested in the Gungnir Multibit and spdif converter what you do with the Gungnir Multibit. Both great performers at their price level.

    How cheap do you want it?

    http://hifimediy.com/Sabre-9018-DAC

    (sabre "harshness" won't be a problem on HD650, it's not transparent enough. You'll just get lots of detail and texture)

    The hd650 will reveal the sabre glare ime. These are far more revealing than most people think. They just won't kill your ears with Sabre like the hd800.

    @Ash1412

    Personally I have zero problem with my sabre dac and using it straight into HD650. Not saying you're wrong, just saying everyone is different.

    I would get Bifrost 4490 and wait a year.

    @purrin

    What happens in a year? Because if you're just saying that tech is advancing you can always wait a year, and another one...

    Deductive reasoning would tell me they are upgrading the multibit board. That the great part of the Schiit DAC's - you won't necessarily be stuck with an obsolete paperweight thats resale value plummeted.

    if the Gungnir Multibit is too good for your needs that's a good reason not to upgrade. not sure why it's a reason to DOWNgrade. I'd just keep the Gungnir Multibit, who knows what you'll get into one day. You might get a work bonus and buy some crazy good headphones or active speakers
    edit: if you just want something physically smaller the soekris dac1101 usb is an option..

    Soekris dac1101 does not compete with Gungnir multi-bit. Very very far from it. Will post impressions in appropriate thread with some comments from my wife. It's one thing downsizing from a 911 to an FRZ. It's another thing downsizing from a 911 to a Nissan Sentra.

    There's no need for a Bifrost Multibit/Gungnir Multibit/Yggdrasil 2 since they can be upgraded.

    We'll still end up using different names for well... differentiation. An example of that is the Bifrost 4490.
